Ask yourself, what factors are most critical in meeting our most basic needs?

  • Economy: We need way to provide food, shelter and clothing for our families. The economy is the engine that allows us to contribute our time and talents and receive compensation from others. If we can’t provide for my family’s most basic needs, then we aren’t sure what enjoyment we can find in life.
  • Defense/Crime: Protecting our families from criminal minds, international or domestic, who could care less about the lives and basic rights of others – would be just as important as providing for our families’ basic needs.
  • Health: Once our basic economic and protection needs are being addressed, then health becomes a high priority. David McCullough shared how miserable many of the 17th and 18th century people were that he as researched. They struggled with pain, with sickness, with diseases and with disabilities that we can’t even imagine today. A tooth ache was an ordeal. Today, we run to the dentist and the pain is gone. Having a healthy life is essential to enjoying it.
  • Environment: If we are caring people, we will want to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities we have enjoyed. Ensuring they have a healthy environment is one of the most basic things we can do.
